Beacon Hill

Who We Are

The Beacon Hill-McFeders Community Council was named in honor of its first president Mr. T.W. McFeders. Since 1974, it has been the neighborhood organization serving Beacon Hill residents from 22nd St. on the north, 31st St. on the south, Troost on the west to Paseo Blvd. on the east.

The Council assists Beacon Hill residents with resources by providing information about changes and improvements such as, development, neighborhood safety, beautification, and social activities.

To understand the significance of this area and its contribution to the fabric of today’s urban renaissance, it helps to know when, where and how it all started.

Beacon Hill was once one of the most prominent neighborhoods in Kansas City’s African American community, with families of doctors, lawyers, teachers, principals, ministers and entrepreneurs. However, by 2000, the area north of 27th St. was mostly vacant lots and abandoned homes. That has changed dramatically! While beautifully modern-designed new homes dot historic Beacon Hill, many long-time neighbors are remodeling and rehabbing their existing homes, bringing a wonderful mix of old and new to a neighborhood that is on the rise.
